PORTFOLIO >   GREEN PROJECTS

The principals at Synthesis have more than 35 years of experience with “green buildings”, sustainable practices and renewable energy as designers and as managers of the entire building development process.

Jim Truby managed the development of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation Headquarters and Environmental Center. This award-winning project was the first project to receive a LEED Platinum Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council and is internationally recognized as an outstanding example of environment-friendly design principles.

Bob Hedden and Tom King both have advanced degrees in environmental engineering. They began their involvement with solar energy and energy conservation in the early 1970’s after the first gasoline crisis. They were responsible for the design of solar thermal energy systems for the White House and the US House of Representatives Office Building Annex as well as many other public and private systems throughout the country and internationally. They have authored manuals for designing solar energy systems for the American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air Condition Engineers (ASHRAE) and the Department of Energy. They have also been heavily involved in analysis, design, construction and management of active and passive solar energy systems in buildings, photovoltaic systems, wind energy, cogeneration and hydropower systems, as well as environmental control projects.

Tom King has conducted energy conservation analyses on many existing governmental buildings in Annapolis and for schools throughout the area. He has also participated in the design of Energy Management Systems for hospitals and other facilities. He has managed the development of reports on various aspects of indoor air quality for the Department of Energy, as well as a report on the design of energy efficient and environmentally sound development for the US Agency for International Development. He has also managed projects involving alternative fuels and power systems in a variety of applications.

Bob Hedden is a member of the Board of the Maryland Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council and the Green Schools Advocacy Committee, and a member of the American Solar Energy Society, Green Roofs for Healthy Cities and the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education.. He is a faculty member of Lorman Educational Services and has presented lectures regarding green and sustainable design including “Sustainable Design from the Owner’s Perspective”.

The long and broad range of experience in this field and corporate membership in the U.S. Green Building Council since its founding, illustrate our long-term and continuing commitment to environmental protection, energy conservation and lowering building operating costs.
