The Nature Center Building is the primary facility on a 116-acre parcel and contains offices, meeting rooms, classrooms, exhibit and storage areas. The Nature Center is approximately 11,000 square feet with a pavilion and field station to be built in a later phase. The Center as a whole with the grounds and trails will support three primary functions: public education, school programs, and administration.
Approximately 70 acres of the property have been in agricultural use for many decades, and most recently have been used to grow small grain crops. There are second growth woodlands at the higher elevations of the site and in segments on the northwest corner and southeast corners of the property. Irvine Nature Center will preserve and protect as many of the existing trees as possible.
In keeping with their mission, the project incorporated sustainable building materials, systems and construction practices including: energy efficient products and materials, ground source heat-pump, reduced water consumption fixtures, aerobic and anaerobic wastewater treatment system, pervious paving, vegetative roof area, material acquisition from local sources, sustainably harvested wood, other recycled materials, and reduced use of toxins.
Synthesis managed programming, design, permitting and construction.
